I love watching a sunset fade away with strong colors. I was coming home from work one day when I realized the sun wasn’t that bright. I normally keep my camera with me in my truck, so I took the back roads to find a good place to capture the sunset. I drove around with no luck until it was just 5 minutes before I was going to loose the light. Seeing the sun above the tree line fade slowly away, I pulled over and got the camera out.

I shot 4 or 5 pictures with the sun and trees only, then I heard from the distance a flock of geese coming my way. Luckily for me, they came across my picture and I took 2 or 3 shots. One of the shots came out in focus and clear. This time I was lucky - I went home with a good picture. It doesn’t happen to me that often, it was just a lucky shot.

The camera and settings used to capture this image:

Lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
Focal length: 200mm
Shutter speed: 1/1000 second

Let’s see…keeping a camera with you in the truck, noting the sunsets potential, driving the back roads to find a good vantage point, taking several shots, recognizing the potential for a special shot when you heard the geese approaching and selecting the right settings to make the capture…hmmm, just exactly where does luck fit into this scenario? Your wonderful image is an example of how good photographers make their own luck through knowledge, experience, instinct, foresight and persistence. Great work, Emmanuel!
