With the Gulf Coast oil spill dominating the news in recent months, I thought I would use this morning’s “Picture of the Day” to remind everyone of just how beautiful the Gulf Coast really is. And what better way to do that than feature a gorgeous Gulf Coast sunrise? This striking image was taken by photographer Cheryl Empy. I love how the sun appears to be rising right out of the water off the Texas coast.
Here are the camera and settings used to capture this image:
Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT
Focal length: 300mm
Shutter speed: 1/400 second
Aperture: f/7.1
ISO: 100

My, how gorgeous indeed.
A sunrise is a magnificent spectacle to behold, the literal dawning of a new day. This is an outstanding shot Cheryl!
I’ve seen lots of beautiful sunrises in my day, and I’ve photographed several of them myself. But I have NEVER seen a more striking sunrise than this. Awesome. Simply awesome.
GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!
All I have to say about this one is… STUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Holy ball of nuclear fire! This is an amazing shot Ms. Empey. Surely it’s hanging on your wall?
It’s a shame what the spilled oil did to the marshes in places, but it’s a travesty what the moratorium on drilling is doing to the Gulf states’ economies. Sorry for the mini political rant there – couldn’t help myself. Outstanding shot Cheryl.
Awesome photo of one truly magnificent sunrise.
Yep, it’s gorgeous for sure. Tom, no need to apologize. I’m right there with you.
At the risk of sounding redundant… STUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!!
What’s not to love about this shot. The colors, the composition, the exposure – everything is simply incredible. I’m awestruck Cheryl.
Love it. Love the Gulf coast as well. My prayers are with the fine folks down there.
Perfect capture, Cheryl. Our thoughts are with our Gulf Coast friends as well.
Gorgeous color and contrast here Cheryl. A great reminder of the infinite variety and beauty our nation holds…despite every crisis that serves to strengthens us.
I miss the gulf coast. I was stationed at Biloxi for 4 years. Beautiful capture!
