Neptune and Triton

When seen from space, no other planet in our solar system is as photogenic as our own earth. The amazing gas giants are quite spectacular as well however. Saturn tends to get the most attention thanks to her gorgeous series of rings, but today’s picture shows that Neptune can strike a mighty lovely pose too.

This image depicts both Neptune and her moon Triton in crescent phase. It was captured way back in 1989 by the Voyager 2 spacecraft as it journeyed towards the outer regions of the solar system. Like its twin robotic explorer Voyager 1, Voyager 2 is now exploring the region where the outer edge of the solar system meets interstellar space. If you’re interested, more information about the Voyager missions can be found here.
