It was blistering hot yesterday and amid these scorching conditions I noted a dragonfly hovering around some burr bushes. It was a species I have not seen before in this region. At about two and a half inches long it was smaller and more sleek than the ones which normally populate the summer skies. He set down about four feet away and I was fortunate enough to get a few images in between gusts of wind. This photo was taken with a Canon A460 set to medium focal range.

I love close-ups of little winged critters, and this one is a real cutie. Great capture Rick.
Nice job. I’m not particularly fond of bugs, but I do enjoy shots like this.
Very nicely done Mr. Ellis.
Dragonflies are so ugly they’re cute, especially close-up. I really like this shot a lot Mr. Ellis.
Discovery Channel has this new series called LIFE, where they capture nature at 2K frames per second. You can try this link for the insects episode: http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/life/
It is truly amazing to see the SUPER SLOW MOTION of nature through this series. I don’t think we really understand just how fast some of the creatures of nature are really moving!
This is a great picture and I really enjoy that you can see the single dark area on each wing!
Gorgeous.
A superb shot Rick.
One of the things that I like most about TodaysPhoto.org is the amazing variety of the images featured here. One day it might be a magnificent landscape, the next day a breath-taking shot of a heavenly body, followed by a superb macro shot of an insect like this one. I’ll never get bored by visiting this amazing “place”. Thanks Rick and Rick.
Awesome macro – great photo!!
It’s really an experience seeing an insect up close like this. The detail in this shot is absolutely incredible.
Nice job.
Beautiful shot Rick.
Great shot of this marvel of natural aviation Rick. Love the color and sharpness of this illusive flier.
It too enjoy the wide variety of photos featured here. It has been said before many times but I’ll say it again: I never know what I’ll find when I visit TodaysPhoto.org every morning, but I always know it’ll be GREAT!!
Great capture, Rick, and perfect DOF.
