Saturn after Equinox

The robotic spacecraft Cassini has been quite busy capturing spectacular images of Saturn and her moons during its orbit around the storied gas giant, and today’s picture (taken right after Saturn’s Equinox) is one of the latest stunners from that series. Cassini captured this image while located behind the planet, giving us earthlings a view of both Saturn and her moon Tethys in crescent phase that simply wasn’t visible from Earth.

Long a favorite subject of science fiction, Saturn continues to hold a special place in our collective heart and imagination. And as these magnificent images stream in from almost a billion miles out in space, they continue to add to the mistique of what is arguably the most easily identifiable planet in our solar system.

Mr. Rouse, the images of Saturn that you have published of late are really something else. Please keep these pictures coming. They really open up a whole new world to those of us who know little to nothing about astronomy.

That is one of the GREAT things about TodaysPhoto Amber; you never know what the pic of the day is going to be, but you know it is going to be good!!

That picture is out of this world, Rick. ;)

Absolutely breathtaking photo today Mr. Rouse. As a child I spent many hours with my dad looking up at the heavens through a homemade telescope that was handed down to him from my grandfather. Saturn fascinated me then even though the images we saw were tiny and fuzzy. These are simply amazing! THANK YOU for veering off the beaten path every once in a while to treat us to these wonderful pictures from space. I LOVE them!
