“Stormchaser”

This photograph was taken in my hometome of Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. Darwin is world famous for its huge thunderstorms producing spectacular lightning!
I was woken up around 2:30am by loud claps of thunder from a maritime thunderstorm which are a frequent event during the “wet season”. I quickly rushed down to the local beach and caught this spectacular cloud-to-ground strike. This photo was my first decent lightning capture, since then I’ve become a very keen “stormchaser”, taking every chance I get to photograph a storm!
The camera and settings used to capture this image:
Camera Model: Canon 1D Mark III
Lens: Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8
Focal length: 16mm
Shutter speed: 24 seconds
Aperture: 7.1
ISO: 200

I’ve got to hand it to you William. You sure have a lot of nerve standing outside during a massive electrical storm like this, but the result is a FANTASTIC image. I top my hat to you sir.
Spectacular is right. WOW!
Goodness gracious!
Oddly enough, I understand completely why you “chase” thunderstorms William. I love a good thunderboomer myself because they vividly demonstrate the awesome power of the Creator. Amazing shot.
Great capture,William.
Awesome capture William. Unless you have tried to photograph lightning before, it is difficult to understand how hard it is to get a good photo like this. Very well done!!

Cooooooool!!!!
I’m what you might call a “weather nut” and I absolutely LOVE being in the midst of a powerful thunderstorm. This picture has really made my day! Outstanding job on a difficult capture.
