When we humans look at the sun it appears to be yellow. That’s it – yellow. But like all stars, in reality this amazing heavenly body emits light in a plethora of wavelengths, the vast majority of which are invisible to our extremely limited human eyes. Today’s picture showcases the sun’s ultraviolet light, and thanks to the technology of NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory virtually every ultraviolet wavelength is represented in the image.
As you can see, the sun is much more active than it appears, and all of that activity produces more energy in a single second than the total amount of energy consumed by us humans since the day God placed Adam and Eve on planet earth!

What an amazing shot! You’ve gotta love modern technology!
I’m speechless.
Just think of the amount of energy produced every second by the trillions of stars out there in the universe. The human mind can’t even comprehend such a figure.
This image and narrative sort of puts the insignificance of our lives on earth in the overall context of the universe into perpective, doesn’t it?
Yes Roy, it sure does.
Mr. Rouse, I was really beginning to miss the wonderful NASA images that you feature on here from time to time. This one is absolutely amazing. Thanks for sharing it with us.
This is one of the best POTD’s yet Mr. Rouse. I LOVE these space pictures!
Heavenly!!
Amazing is right!!!!!
spectacular image! i’m a bit confused, though… the title says “extreme ultraviolet”, but the caption says infrarad. UV and IR are at opposite ends of the spectrum…
You’re absolutely right Rocky. I have no idea how the words ultraviolet and infrared became transposed in my mind as they are indeed quite different from one another. Thanks so much for the correction! Most likely I would never have caught it had you not pointed it out (Believe it or not, I always proof-read these things at least three times!)
Yeah and as his wife and proof-reader also I have no idea what all these space things mean.
What an incredible photo!! It is amazing!!
Spectacular!
