This photo was taken on route to the summit of Triglav in Slovenia. I was watching a few climbers through my 100-400 lens. We were heading up there the next day and I was looking for the route, and of course taking a few shots at the same time. Then, this gentleman came along and decided to rest up and get his camera out. With the clouds swirling around the three ridges it presented the ideal shot to sum up how small you feel when you are on a narrow ridge many thousands of feet up.
Here are the camera and settings used to capture this image:
Camera: Canon 5D MK II
Lens: Canon 100-400L
Focal length: 275mm
Shutter speed: 1/500th second
Aperture: f/7.1
ISO: 250

AWESOME SHOT!!!! The climber really gives the mountain a sense of scale.
What a striking perspective Mr. Andison. This is a wonderful shot by any measure.
When I look at this photo I can’t help but see the magnificence of the Creator in contrast with the frailty of man. Mountain climbers are no doubt among the bravest, most self-assured human beings around, but compared to the Almighty we’re nothing. Great shot Duncan.
I love it!!
“Where the earth meets the sky.”
You’re so right Brandon. When compared to the Creator the bravest and strongest among us are but tiny specks. This photo really brings that fact home. You have captured a real beauty Mr. Andison.
I agree – this is a wonderful shot and it would make an outstanding motivational poster.
You were certainly in the perfect position to make this shot Duncan. Well done. I would have been too nervous up there to even hold a camera!
Simply awesome on so many levels.
Great shot Sir.
Talk about going the extra mile to get the shot! This is incredible!!!
My grandfather spent three years scaling the most famous peaks of European Alps, and my mom has a picture of him that looks quite a bit like this one. Thanks for bringing back some great memories.
WOW!!!
The climber adds so much life and scale to this once in a lifetime image. Great shot Duncan.
Excellent composition! The three strong diagonal ridgelines, combined with the swirling clouds, give a great feeling of depth and perspective, and the B&W conversion works perfectly. The climber really adds a sense of scale, and conveys a very powerful feeling of how small and almost insignificant a man is in this rugged environment. I agree, this would make a great motivational poster… or just a terrific framed print on the wall!
Thanks everyone, your kind words are really appreciated.
Brandon, you are so right. When we are on high summits looking out and watching the world go by you realise how small we are and that we are only one of many creatures placed upon this earth and how important it is that we look after and care for mother nature. It always feels spiritual, cleansing even and certainly privileged. I guess it is one of the main reasons I enjoy climbing, it provides these moments of reflection.
Right place at the right time? I would say so. Perfect, simply perfect Duncan Andison!
Absolutely awesome. Perfect composition!
