"4 Wooden Crosses"

4 Wooden crosses marking the the graves of our beloved dogs.
Photo by Cheria Rouse.       (Click the photo for a larger view.)

Cheria took a walk around our property yesterday morning, enjoying the newly fallen snow that had fallen overnight and turned the place into a beautiful winter wonderland. As usual, she had her camera in hand, snapping picture after picture of anything and everything that looked pretty with a layer of snow on it. When she got back in the house, one picture in particular really caught our attention...

Over the years we have lost some dear friends, and five of them are buried in our back yard beneath a large black walnut tree. Dog lovers through and through, as our beloved pets passed away one by one, we gave each of them a fitting burial and marked the graves with wooden crosses that I had made in my woodshop. Why are there only four crosses when we have lost five pets? Because two of them were just pups when they passed away - a brother and sister - so we buried them together since they were never apart during their all-too-short lives.

Some people might think it rather silly to bury a pet and mark the grave with a cross, but we feel they deserve the same respect upon their passing as any other member of the family. So if you ever pay us a visit, if you look way in the back of our yard down next to the creek you'll see 4 wooden crosses - symbols of the joy they gave us when they were with us and the memories they left us with when they moved on.

Hi Rick. I can relate to Cheria’s picture and your comments today. Although we do not have grave markers, each one of our pets has also had a proper burial. We are also pet lovers and loosing a pet is indeed like loosing a member of our family. It is amazing how close we humans can get to our pets. Good job Cheria and thanks for some good memories.
