Picture of the day - January 9, 2009
"A rose for you"

Sean Parmley.
Today's picture shows what can often be achieved with a little
imagination, patience, and experimentation. Photographer Sean Parmley
captured this gorgeous image of a rose blossom using...well, I'll
let him explain it:
"I really hate winter, so my camera doesn't get much use here in
Ontario in the winter months. I recently read an article about
shooting indoors using available window light, and how that natural
light can enhance a photo. Off to the store I went to buy my wife
some
flowers (LOL...hidden agenda here).
I got a nice small bouquet of roses, and set up my gear. With a
nice
black background, I started to shoot, and an hour later, I had
filled a 4GB memory card with window light shots of roses.
I tried all sorts of combinations, and when I started to process the
shots, this one jumped off the screen at me. It was shot very late
in the day, so the light was starting to dim, and I reflected the
light
back on to the rose with a piece of white card. I also played
with a
few different filter effects until I was satisfied that this
glowing soft
effect was the one.
Now, I think the wife will be getting suspicious as to why she is
getting so many flowers. Thank you for looking, and I hope you
enjoy
'A rose for you'." --Sean Parmley

This is one of the most beautiful pictures you have ever published.
I just love it! I have experimented with shooting flowers using
window light myself, but was never quite satisfied with the results.
Mr. Parmley's outstanding effort has inspired me to give it another
try.

What a pleasant surprise to open up the "Picture of the Day" as I do
every morning expecting to find yet another magnificent landscape
waiting for me, only to find this amazing rose blossom filling my
computer screen. Keep the wonderful landscapes coming, but a
"flower" every now and then is quite welcome.

As a fellow Canadian "shooter" I can certainly understand Sean's
reluctance to venture outdoors with his camera during the winter,
but I force myself to do it anyway - sometimes to my later regret
lol. Great job on an absolutely amazing capture Sean!
