"Eyes of the hunter"

Winston Rockwell.
Frequent contributor Winston Rockwell is a master at capturing the
essence of any scene, and today's picture is no exception. You can
almost feel the intensity in this male lion's eyes as he stares at
something off in the distance. The following is Mr. Rockwell's story
behind the image:
"The African lion sits at the top of the food chain. In his
native
habitat, this regal creature is the master of all he surveys,
and
humans have always regarded him among the most powerful
and
ferocious of four-legged predators.
In the wild, a male lion will be the leader of a "pride",
surrounding
himself with a harem of females who do the hunting and
rearing of
young while he lounges at his ease in the grass. Still,
the male, with
his shaggy mane, menacing roar, and savage fangs and
claws, is
considered the fiercest animal on the savannah... and his
royal
bearing has earned him the title of the "King of the Beasts".
This male lion, a 15-year-old resident of Woodland Park Zoo in
Seattle, was relaxing in the sun. Something caught his attention
and
he turned his head to look. I snapped this photo from about
50 feet
away using a Canon 40D with a 100-400 lens at 400mm.
I was able to
capture the intensity and imperial demeanor of his
gaze. I'd hate to
be an antelope..." --Winston Rockwell
