"Agathla Peak"

Today's picture is yet another fine piece of work by master
photographer Winston Rockwell, and as always it is simply
magnificent. The following is his story behind the image:
"Agathla Peak, or 'El Capitan' as it's sometimes called by the
locals,
is a jagged peak that rises about 1,500 feet from the desert
floor
a few miles north of the town of Kayenta, in northern Arizona.
It's
located right next to highway 163, and dominates the
surrounding
landscape as you drive north out of town on the way to
Monument
Valley.
Like so many of Arizona's natural wonders, this spire is the result
of ancient forces that shaped this landscape over eons of volcanic
activity and erosion. Once the throat of an ancient volcano, the
magma that formed Agathla cooled and solidified, and as the
millennia wore on, the softer stone of the original peak eroded
away, leaving this volcanic 'plug' standing like a sentinel above
the surrounding landscape." --Winston "Rocky"

My wife and I drove past Agathla Peak a couple of years ago on the
way to visit Monument Valley. It looked impressive then, but Mr.
Rockwell's fine photograph makes me want to return with my own
camera. Amazing effort Mr. Rockwell!

Winston Rockwell's landscapes never fail to awe me. I've been
shooting as a serious amateur for over 20 years, but my work has
never reached this level and I doubt that it ever will. I have
always considered myself a pretty good photographer but I'm humbled
by what I see on this site. I love coming here every day to check
out the POTD, and Mr. Rockwell's images are always among the best of
the best.
