In every nook and cranny of this great country one can find relics
from the past, those not so subtle reminders of a time when life was
simpler, yet in many ways more enjoyable and satisfying. In today's
picture, frequent contributor Winston Rockwell has captured one of
those wonderful scenes that we often refer to as "Americana". Here
is his story behind the image:
"Sometimes in the hustle and rush of everyday life, we get so
wrapped up in our own affairs that we forget there's a great big
world out there that is full of beauty and tranquility. It's easy,
especially with the constant drumbeat of bad news over the last
few
months, to lose sight of what's really important in life. I find
that taking a day to get away from the noise and bustle - and
the
bad news - is a great way to recharge my batteries and
refresh my
soul.
I was on just such a one-day "sabbatical" last week when I came
across this scene along a rural road in the foothills about 40 miles
northeast of Seattle, WA. The area is dotted with isolated houses
and small farms, the pace is slower, and the atmosphere is quiet
and
serene. When I rounded a bend and saw this scene, I pulled
over and
stopped to simply sit for a moment and enjoy the view.
The rustic
barn, set against the backdrop of snow-covered peaks,
struck me as
one of those archetypal images of the American
west; pioneers left
the relative comfort and civilization of the
eastern cities and
spent weeks traversing the Great Plains to
settle on small farms
like these, nestled in valleys among the
hills and mountains,
scratching out a living in a new and rugged
land.
Life was harder then, but simpler, and people lived much closer
to
the earth. The work was hard, but the rewards were great,
and
success was measured not by the balance of one's 401k,
but by the
bonds of family and the harvest in the root cellar.
Looking at this
scene, I could almost imagine life as it was 150
years ago... and
I'm not sure it wasn't better."

I always enjoy Mr. Rockwell's photos, but his narratives are always
just as good as the pictures themselves. I live north of the border,
but I appreciate "Americana" as much as anyone. Great job on this
one Mr. Rockwell!

Another magnificent photo Rocky!! Not only do you have an eye that
creates such wonderful images, but your text that often accompanies
those images is what really ties it all together!! I have seen many
of your photos now and read much of your text and this, IMHO, is one
of the best. I like this one very much!! Thanks so much for sharing
your work with us.

Well composed, and the exposure is perfect given the incredible
contrasts in the image. Great picture all around.

This site features great photographs day in and day out, and Winston
Rockwell's efforts are among the best of the best.
