Colorful Antelope Canyon
Winston Rockwell.
Today's picture of magnificent Antelope Canyon was taken by master
photographer Winston Rockwell, one of TodaysPhoto.org's most active contributors.
The following is his story behind the image:
"Antelope Canyon, located on Navajo tribal land a few miles
outside
the northern Arizona town of Page, is one of the best-known and
most photographed slot canyons in the world. And looking at this
image, it's not hard to see why. The colors that play across the
curving, sculpted sandstone walls are simply amazing, and watching
them change as the light and shadows move with the sun is... well,
incredible!
The upper canyon, where this shot was taken, is up to 120 feet
deep,
but only a few feet wide - as narrow as 4 or 5 feet in some
places,
and opening out to almost 20 feet in others - but always,
the
fantastic shapes and colors remind a visitor that this is a very
special place. The lower canyon, several miles away, has more
subdued colors, and though popular in its own right, it is more
difficult to traverse, and consequently is less crowded with
tourists
than the upper canyon.
The canyon is only accessible to the public via guided tours. There
are several tour companies in Page, all operated by the Navajo
tribe,
and tours of the upper canyon range from about 45 minutes -
just
long enough to walk through the canyon end-to-end and back - to
over 2 hours, which gives serious photographers time to capture
images of this amazing place without crowds in the picture.
Whichever tour you choose, Antelope Canyon is a must-see for
anyone
visiting the great southwest!" --Winston Rockwell
