Aurora Borealis over Sortland, Norway
Håkon Iversen.
Auroras are among nature's most impressive displays, and a number of
them have been featured on TodaysPhoto.org over the years. Today's
picture features a spectacular Aurora Borealis painting the sky
green above the town of Sortland, Norway. The following is
photographer Håkon Iversen's story behind the image:
"This picture was taken in Sortland, Norway in mid-January 2009.
Sortland is just north of Lofoten in Northern Norway, so we get
Aurora fairly often. I was out to take some nighttime panoramas
of
our small town when the Aurora suddenly came out. I shot
around 50
pictures in the time that it was visible. I didn’t have any
ND-grads
with me so I had to use my hand to shield the street
lights to avoid
too much burning of them due to 30 seconds of
shutter time."

I have always wanted to see the Aurora Borealis looking like this. I
have seen it before, but it did not have any color in it like so
many pictures I have seen. Today’s photo is very pretty! Very nicely
done Mr. Iversen!!

As a girl growing up in Canada I saw countless auroras, but never
one like this. This one is as amazing as it is beautiful.
