The Birmingham, Alabama skyline

Today's picture features a beautiful nighttime view of
Birmingham, Alabama, seen from atop a hill across from the
Birmingham Airport. Photographer Eric McFerrin was on his way home
after working late a few days ago when he saw this spectacular
scene. The orange sunset and city skyline were just too gorgeous to
pass up, so he scaled the hill and "shot" the "Picture of the Day"!
Birmingham was founded in 1871, and since the city's economy was
based primarily upon the iron and steel industry, it was given the
name Birmingham in honor of Birmingham, England - the industrial
center of Great Britain. Although Birmingham still has a large
manufacturing base, her economy has diversified over the years into
the service sector, and today this largest city in Alabama is one of
the South's leading financial and banking centers.
Like many other great American cities, Birmingham's skyline looks
magnificent after the sun goes down, her high-rises and streetlights
all aglow as the city goes about its business. The city sidewalks
might be empty, but there is still plenty going on if you just know
where to look.
