Picture of the day - September 2, 2008
"Calm before the storm"

Today's picture shows what a difference just a few hours can make in
the course of a single day's weather. Photographer Cheryl Empey
captured this image of a gorgeous sunrise just as Hurricane Gustav
was making its run towards New Orleans. When the worst of the storm
had passed, it became clear that Gustav hadn't caused nearly as much
loss of life and property damage as Katrina did three years ago, and
for that we should all be thankful.
Although hurricanes can be tracked days in advance of landfall, the
exact point where they will eventually come ashore can remain a
mystery right up until the event is ready to take place. And as this
beautiful photo demonstrates, a terrible weather day can begin quite
nicely.
