Picture of the day - November 13, 2008
"Chilly Wasp"

Timothy W. Briggs.
A typical sign of autumn is seeing an insect that would normally be
flying around and flittering hither and yon at lightning speed
moving about as fast as pond water - or not moving at all. A few
days ago photographer Timothy Briggs captured this intriguing
close-up image of a rather chilly wasp perched on a cattail. Here
are a few words about the photo:
"This photo was actually three high-speed, bracketed exposures
that were taken handheld and then blended together in
post-processing. I had actually visited a local pond one morning in
search of dragonflies. Because of the cooler temperatures that
morning, I wasn't able to get any dragonfly shots but I happened to
notice this wasp apparently trying to warm himself up."

Mr. Briggs did very good with this picture. It is nice and sharp and
I like the way that the Wasp's antenna's resemble a handlebar
mustache.

Although I'm not a big fan of creepy, crawly things that can sting
me I do love this picture. Very nice.

An impressive photo, considering that most exposure blending
software requires the multiple images to be perfectly aligned… a
difficult feat to accomplish when shooting handheld! |
