Picture of the day - August 2, 2008
A Cuban lizard showing its colors

Its oppressive communist dictatorship and miserable living
conditions excepted, there is much beauty to be found on the
Caribbean island of
Cuba. Miles of gorgeous beaches, endless
spectacular sunsets, acres and acres of sugar cane fields swaying in
the gentle ocean breeze, and the warm smiles of some of the
friendliest people on the planet make Cuba a place where the
contrast between beauty and poverty is quite extreme.
As today's picture demonstrates, even the members of Cuba's animal
kingdom do their part to add beauty to the island landscape. The
colorful little fellow seen above is a Cuban lizard (Latin name
Anolis carolinensis) that photographer Rasmus Andersen
encountered while shooting there. The camera and settings used to
capture this image are as follows:
Camera: Canon EOS 350D
Shutter speed: 1/800 of a second
Aperture: f/8
Focal length: 230mm
ISO: 1600
