A White-Tailed Deer Near Abingdon, Va

Here in the Appalachians, the white-tailed deer is one of our
most beloved creatures. Young and old alike get a thrill when they
see one of these beautiful animals venture out into the open,
offering a fleeting glimpse at what is normally a very secretive
existence.
When European settlers moved into the "hills and hollers" of our
region, they had to "live off the land" by growing their own crops
and hunting game, and one of their favorite game animals was the
white-tailed deer. Like the Indians before them, many settlers came
to depend on the local deer population to help them make it through
the long, cold winters by supplying venison for the table and fur
for coats and shoes.
Although we now have supermarkets bursting at the seams with a wide
variety of affordable meats and a clothing store around every corner,
the tradition of "deer hunting" is still alive and well here in the
Mountain Empire. But many of us prefer to do the "shooting" with a
camera.
About the photo: My brother-in-law Bill saw this young deer
staring back at him from the field beside their home, so he pulled
out his brand-new digital camera and captured the "Picture Of The
Day".
