Memories of a dirt road

Looking down a dirt road.

Today's picture by photographer Brian Lary really takes me back to my childhood. It was a simpler time back then, a time when this young boy could walk barefoot down the dirt road to my friend's house - or even all the way to the local store - without having to fear whoever might happen to pass by. We knew most everyone in Widener Valley by their first name, and they could be trusted to mind their own business and leave us kids alone.

It's hard to tell just how many miles I walked and biked on the crooked dirt and gravel lanes that criss-crossed the valley at that time, but it surely must have been in the thousands. Yes, that was a simpler time, the likes of which today's kids will never have the pleasure of living through.

I will always treasure my memories of those long, hot summer days when a sweaty youngster could simply hop off his bike at any time and jump in the nearby creek to cool off. It was a time when innocence was respected, and all we kids had to worry about was making it home in time for supper. It's a crying shame that such a time doesn't exist anymore.
