Picture of the day -

Downtown Abingdon, Virginia in December

A stroll down the red brick sidewalks of historic
Abingdon, Virginia is like taking a walk back through time.
You'll see houses, store buildings, and a number of other structures
dating all the way back to the 18th century, and most of them are
still in use today.
Abingdon's history is just as amazing as her beauty. At various
times she has played host to the likes of Daniel Boone, scores of
heroes from both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars (Union and
Confederate), Presidential First Ladies, a bevy of world-famous
actors, and many others. It's actually pretty hard to get around in
Old Abingdon without passing a number of structures of great
historical significance.
Today's picture features a scene from Old Abingdon during the 2007
Christmas season. It was taken early yesterday morning while the
streets and sidewalks were still more or less empty, but a short
time later they came alive as the town's citizens and visitors began
stirring around. I never grow tired of walking those wonderful brick
sidewalks, and I feel blessed to live so close to such a beautiful
and interesting place.
