Drayton Hall

Today's picture of Charleston, South Carolina's Drayton Hall
offers a glimpse of the old south that's just about as authentic as
any you're likely to find anywhere. This superbly maintained
Georgian Palladian style plantation house still has the same look
and ambience that it had way back when it was first constructed well
before the dawn of the Revolutionary War.
Over the centuries this stately brick structure has been through two
major wars, many years of racial turmoil and several devastating
hurricanes, yet today she still stands tall on the bank of the
Ashley River serving as a constant reminder of everything that made
the old south such an intriguing place. A visit to Drayton Hall
takes one back to a time when life south of the Mason-Dixon Line was
much simpler, yet extremely controversial due to slavery.
For better or worse, life in the pre-Civil War south was what it
was, and a walk through and around Drayton Hall brings out the
essence of that period with crystal clarity. If you happen to have
an interest in American history, you simply must see Drayton
Hall and Plantation. And if you don't have such an interest, you
just might develop one after paying her a visit.
