Duncansville One-Room School - Abingdon, Va

Photo of Abingdon, Virginia's Duncansville School.

All across America, most of the one-room schoolhouses that once served small rural communities have been replaced by larger, more modern school buildings that serve large sections of their counties. Today's picture features one of the handful of one-room schoolhouses still standing in present day Washington County, Virginia: the Duncansville One-Room School.

In 1889 Henry and Amanda Duncan built this tiny school building on property that had been donated to them just for that purpose, and classes for kids of all ages and grade levels were held there for 65 years. Duncansville was closed in 1954 as part of a plan to consolidate the many one-room schools in the county into just a few larger schools.

In 2000, the old Duncansville school building was restored and moved to its current Abingdon, Virginia location, and these days the historic structure houses a museum that welcomes countless visitors each year during the popular Virginia Highlands Festival.
