Edinburgh Castle at twilight

The British Isles have a long and rich history that is most evident
today in the many historic buildings and ruins that dot the
countryside. Numerous human conflicts as well as the ravages of time
and the elements have taken their toll on a number of these
magnificent structures, but some of them remain standing in all
their historic glory to serve as reminders of times past.
Today's picture features an early-evening view of stately
Edinburgh Castle, one of Scotland's most popular tourist
destinations. The site upon which the fortress stands has been
inhabited by humans since at least the 9th century BC, and much
blood has been shed in its defense over the centuries.
Although most of this famous stronghold's buildings were destroyed
during the Lang Siege back in the 1500's,
Saint Margaret's Chapel
survived the onslaught, and this spectacular building is now
recognized as the oldest remaining structure in the city of
Edinburgh.
Edinburgh Castle dominates the city's skyline, and at night the
sight is quite impressive indeed. This picture was taken from
Princess Street, the location from which the view of the fortress is most
striking.
