Italy's Euganei Hills

Although the spectacular scene featured in today's picture looks much like one you might enjoy from most any mountaintop right here in southwestern Virginia, photographer Gianluca Cordellina was literally an ocean away when he captured it. What you're actually looking at here are the spectacular Euganei Hills of Italy's Veneto region, one of the most beautiful parts of one of the world's most beautiful countries. Like much of Italy's landscape, the Euganei Hills were formed (and later transformed) by volcanic activity during the Eocene and Oligocene periods of the earth's history.
