The Faraglioni

Photo of Capri's Faraglioni.

Today's picture features the Faraglioni, three gigantic rocks that lie just off the coast of the Italian island of Capri. Faraglioni is their collective name, but each of the rocks also has a name of its own:
  • Stella (on the left and still attached to the main island)
  • Mezzo (in the middle)
  • Scopolo (on the right)
The Faraglioni dominate the rocky coastline of Capri, and their famous images grace most of the picture-postcards that are sold at the popular vacation destination. These tough old blocks of stone have managed to survive eons of coastal landslides, ferocious weather and sea erosion.

This beautiful image by photographer Attila Iván shows the Faraglioni from their most popular viewpoint with the rocks standing sentinel in the distance while a number of ever-present yachts enjoy a day in the gorgeous Bay of Naples.
