Fields-Penn 1860 House

In 1860 a gentleman by the name of James Fields built his
family a beautiful brick home in downtown Abingdon, Virginia. The
Fields
lived there for several years enjoying their middle class lifestyle
even as the Civil War raged on around them. Then, in the 1890's the
family of George and Estelle Penn moved into the house and remained
there for the next 75 years!
During the period when the home was occupied by the Fields and Penn
families, it was recognized as one of the finest, most luxurious
homes in the region. This wonderfully preserved piece of 19th
century architecture still stands today as a museum and monument to
life during the Civil War era and the gilded age of the 1890's.
The Fields-Penn 1860 House Museum entertains guests via guided tours
from April to December. Skilled interpreters provide a glimpse at
southwestern Virginia life during a period of national upheaval and
renewal, giving you a sense of what it might have been like to live
during such anxious and exciting times in our nation's history.
The Fields-Penn House is located on the corner of Main and Cummings
Streets in historic Abingdon, Virginia.
