Flags flying over Fort Niagara
Today's picture features an historic fort that was controlled at
various times by three different nations: France, England and
the
United States. Here is photographer Robert Schwarztrauber
to tell
you about it:
"These three flags symbolize the nations which have held Fort
Niagara. The white French flag was flown here from 1726 to 1759.
It
was the original banner of the Marine department responsible
for
protecting France's colonies.
The British Union flag flew from 1759 to 1796 after they took
control in the French and Indian War. The British held the fort
through the American Revolution, but were forced to yield it
to the
United States by treaty in 1796. They surrendered it
again at the
end of the War of 1812 - the last conflict fought
here.
The U.S. flag flown here replicates the 15 stars and stripes
flown
during colonial times." --Robert Schwarztrauber
