Picture of the day -
February 23, 2007 A Foggy
Meadowview, Virginia Sunrise

"And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And
God
saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from
the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he
called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day."
Genesis 1:3-5
Ever since that very first "day", each and every morning has been
graced by a glorious sunrise, and each and every evening saw the sun
drop below the horizon to make way for the rest of the stars and the
moon to take their turn at shining light upon the earth. Of course
on cloudy days we can't actually see the sun rise and set,
but rise and set it does nonetheless.
I believe that God created the sun, moon and stars for the benefit
and enjoyment of us human beings, even though we had not yet been
created ourselves at the time. You see, God is all-knowing. Before
He had even begun the task of creating our world, He already knew
that the creature He would create in His own image would soon
succumb to the devil's temptation in the Garden of Eden, casting all
who would follow into a life of sin and hardship.
But through His infinite love and grace, He created light so that we
who had been blinded by the veil of sin (darkness) would be able to
use our eyes to see to get around and do the things we need to do in
order to live our earthly lives. Our God is a merciful God - He
could have just as easily have forced us to stumble around in the
darkness for our entire lifetimes, but He didn't. Instead, He gave
us the sun, moon and stars to guide us on our lifelong journey to
the hereafter.
But there will come a day when the heavenly bodies that we have come
to know and love so well will no longer be needed. In heaven, God
Himself is the source of all the light we will ever need, shining
brighter than all of the stars in the universe combined. In fact, so
bright is the light of our Lord that we humans could never look upon
His face without being instantly consumed and destroyed. But
thankfully, the story doesn't end there...
Everyone who chooses to accept the precious gift of life that Jesus
so graciously made available to us some 2,000 years ago at Calvary
will some day pass from this life and step into the very presence of
God. In an instant, our human eyes will be no more and we'll be able
to see our Lord in all His glory. The Father and Son will shine on
forever, never to set or be obscured by a few passing clouds. Most
of us adore magnificent sunrises and sunsets, but the most
spectacular light we will ever see will be waiting for us when we
cross over to the other side.
About the photo: I stepped outside my front door yesterday
morning to find the sun shining through a veil of fog that had
settled in the night before. I walked back inside to grab my camera,
then went back out and captured the "Picture of the Day".
