Sometimes the most mundane of objects become precious artifacts that
take us back to times past, and a wonderful example is featured in
today's
picture. Here is photographer Eric McFerrin to tell us about it:
"This photograph features a pair of gauges that were recovered
from the
Tennessee Coal and Iron Wenonah Mines in 1968 by my late friend Alex
Nuckols while the demolition operations were taking place. They are
now
part of the growing artifact collection at Birmingham, Alabama's new
Red
Mountain Park. The left gauge came from the Wenonah 8 mine, while
the
right gauge was recovered from the Wenonah 10 bath house.
Mining of red ore began in the Wenonah area in 1880 and ended in
1962.
Ore from the mines supplied the Alice Furnace (Jones Valley's first
blast
furnace) in the early years and the US Steel operations at Fairfield
and
Ensley in later years. This image was captured with my Canon EOS 40D
and 24-70L lens. Flash used was a 430EX camera left, hotshoe mounted
550EX for fill." --Eric McFerrin

I love the "stories" that accompany these pictures almost as much as
the images themselves. Nicely done in every way.

I just love this photo Mr. McFerrin. It has sort of an old-time feel
to it. This is certainly one instance where the black & white color
scheme really makes the picture.

Striking image today Mr. Rouse! Thanks for giving me my little
"pick-me-up" each and every morning for the last 3 years - and
counting.
