Today's picture comes to us from master photographer Winston
Rockwell, and as always this one is quite intriguing indeed. The
following is his story behind the image:
"I went to a park near my house a while back, hoping the fog
would lift and give me some photo opportunities when the sun
broke
through. As I waited for the fog to clear, I walked through
the
misty morning, enjoying the soft stillness fog always brings,
until
I passed these old pilings, remnants of a decades-gone pier
that
served a cross-lake ferry back before WWII.
Though it was 10:30 in the morning, the gloom and fog len
everything a soft, monochrome appearance, and as I stood
looking at
this scene, I was struck by the sense that these
ilings were like
ghosts from the past, marching off into the
mists of history, but
giving us one last look before they vanish.
I could almost imagine
the ferry dock, bustling with passengers
the sounds of
conversations and the hurried goodbyes as
people left for a day in
"the big city", Seattle, across the lake.
I had passed these pilings countless times on my walks through
this
park photographing birds, but had never really paid them
much mind
until this particular morning. Something about the
dim light, the
fog, and the stark shapes of the decaying wood
just caught my eye,
and I snapped this photo as a reminder
that all our works eventually
crumble, and that one day, far in
the future, someone will pause on
a foggy morning to look at
what we've left behind - it will be our
turn to be the ghosts
in the mist..."

In a world sometimes cluttered with so many details as to make it
impossible to focus, Mr. Rockwell's’ image shows how simplicity can
convey profound meaning. Almost abstract in its elements, the story
it tells is at once dreamlike and yet very real. A great realization
of thought and concept. Great work, Mr. Rockwell!

What a marvelously eerie photo. And a truly great writeup.

This would make a wonderful cover image for a novel. Hauntingly
beautiful.

I love this picture. I love the stark contrast between the misty
background and the pilings. Very nice Mr. Rockwell!
