Pickin'

Whenever I see someone pickin' a guitar, I always think of my
wonderful dad. You see, he always had a guitar in the house, and he
could play it to perfection. Whether it was Mother Maybelle Carter's
"Wildwood Flower", an old Country standard or one his many
favorite gospel tunes, dad was always eager to pick up his guitar
and pick a song or two.
He went to be with the Lord almost a decade ago, but in my mind's eye
I can still see dad sitting on the couch pickin' along as he and mom
sang a heart-rending duet of "I'll Fly Away" or "Amazing
Grace". Those precious memories are still just as strong today
as they have ever been, and nowadays when I see someone - anyone
- pick up a guitar and start pickin', I'm taken back to times past
when the best guitar picker I ever knew would make an old piece of
wood and steel resonate with the most beautiful sounds this country
boy's ears have ever heard.
I love you dad, and I miss you more than ever.
