Aunt Doris' Halloween Display

If Christmas is the holiday that kids love the most, then
Halloween must surely be a close second. As the sun begins to
set this evening, thousand of little ghosts and goblins will spring
forth from car doors all across America, treat bag in hand, eagerly
anticipating the goodies they'll receive when they knock on the
door. One by one, they'll yell "Trick or Treat!", hold out their
bags to receive the generous bounty, and then scurry back down the
sidewalk and head for the neighbor's house.
Of course parents love Halloween almost as much as their kids. They
beam with pride as their youngsters go from door to door and put on
the charm, and then say "thank you" when the homeowners toss a "goodie" or
two into their bags. I guess it brings back memories of Halloweens
past when it was them dressing up and going trick or treating.
Sadly, trick or treating isn't quite the same as it was back
when I was a youngster. In those days, city sidewalks and country
lanes alike would be absolutely filled with trick or treaters, and
virtually every house in every neighborhood had someone waiting -
eager, in fact to hand out treats to their tiny visitors. But we
live in a different era now.
Over the years many of the "tricksters" have become quite malicious,
making it difficult for parents to feel comfortable taking their
kids into other neighborhoods after dark. As a result, what used to be a steady
stream of kids knocking on the door has turned into a trickle as
most parents opt for taking their kids to the mall or a trusted
sub-division.
Halloween has traditionally been a day of fun and treats for our
children, and it still is today. Although a few bad apples have made
things more difficult for parents, there is still a lot of fun to be
had on this most interesting day. I just miss seeing all of those
little ghosts and goblins walking up to my door with open bags in
their hands and huge grins on their faces. It's really us
adults who are missing out on the fun.
About the photo: Cheria, Olivia and I were visiting Cheria's Aunt
Doris and Uncle Charles at their home in Damascus, Virginia the
other day when we spotted the wonderful Halloween display they had
put together beside their driveway. Cheria snapped off a few
pictures, and one of them is the "Picture Of The Day".
