"Heron & Water Lilies"

(Click on the photo for a larger view)
Today's picture features a striking scene from Durban, South
Africa's Botanical Gardens. It appears that the photographer
(who wishes to remain anonymous) captured this heron in the middle of a pond covered with water
lilies as it was prowling around for a tasty fish
dinner. But it looks like he (she?) is simply posing for the camera!
Here are the camera
and settings to capture this image:
Camera: Olympus SP500UZ
Focal length: 63mm
Shutter speed: 1/250 second
Aperture: f/3.7
ISO:164

Outstanding image all around today Mr. Rouse. What dedication you
must have to do this day in and day out, for years now. Great job on
a fantastic website!!!

Well, it's certainly obvious that Great Blue Herons are found
worldwide! These birds are common here in the Pacific Northwest as
well, and make marvelous photographic subjects. They're so
statuesque, and often stand stock still, so they're easy to
photograph... the trick is getting close enough for a good photo,
which today's photographer seems to have managed just fine. The huge
leaves make an almost prehistoric backdrop, and the pink lilies add
a splash of color. Nicely done!

This is really a very striking scene. Near perfect in every way,
"technically" and otherwise. Great job!!!
