Picture of the day -
June 25, 2008 Horseshoe Bend

Winston Rockwell.
Arizona's Horseshoe Bend is one of the most photographed sections of
river in the world, and master photographer Winston Rockwell offered
this photo of it for publication as today's picture. The following
is his story behind the image:
"Horseshoe Bend, located just a couple of miles outside the town
of Page, Arizona, is not a place for the acrophobic! The "viewpoint"
is a rock ledge at the top of the canyon; from there, it's a sheer
drop of hundreds of feet to the rocky slope below, and that slope
tumbles another 150 feet or so to the water's edge. And there's
no
railing!
Still, for those willing to stand on the brink, the view is
spectacular,
as the Colorado River winds its way from the Glen
Canyon dam, a
couple of miles upstream, toward the entrance of the
Grand Canyon
to the southwest.
Someday the rock in the middle of
this bend will be an island,
surrounded on all sides by the yawning
chasm of the canyon, but
for now it's a stunning vista too huge to
fit into a single frame even
with a 17mm wide-angle lens. A 10mm
lens would encompass it all,
but I didn't have one, so I shot 4
separate frames in vertical
format and stitched them together with
software to make a
single image.
To find this spectacular spot, drive south out of Page on
Highway 99
for about two miles, till you see a brown sign on
the right marking
the location. Follow a short dirt road to the
parking lot, and hike
3/4 mile to the viewpoint. Warning: It's all
uphill on the way back!
And if you do take children, be sure to
keep them well away from the
edge because there's nothing
below but empty space for 500 feet!"

Rick,
I'll have to take in the view on this website, because that is just
