Houghton Mill

Houghton Mill is a working watermill located in the village of Houghton on the river Great Ouse in Cambridgeshire, UK. This historic mill is owned by The National Trust, and it is one of the most-loved tourist attractions in the British Isles. Photographer Martin J. Megson lives nearby, and he took the wonderful photo above at 7:00 one morning when the light and water were at their best.

Humans discovered the power of moving water thousands of years ago, but grist mills for grinding corn, wheat and other grains into corn meal and flour didn't become widespread around the globe until the last half of the second millennium. Watermills had their heyday during the 19th and early 20th centuries, but today only a relative handful remain in operation. Houghton Mill is the last working watermill on the Great Ouse.
