"Ice Storm"

Winter is a season of contrasts. Kids love it when it snows and they
get to stay home from school and spend the day sledding, building
snowmen and making snow angels, but adults who have to struggle to
make a living hate having to get up early to shovel snow from their
driveways and drive on treacherous roads to get to work. But
regardless of whether you love it or hate it, you have to admit that
snow makes for some beautiful scenery.
But there is also a different kind of winter storm, one that makes
it even more difficult and dangerous to get around than snow. Ice
storms leave virtually everything in their paths covered with a
layer of clear, hard ice that makes it extremely difficult to even
stand
up, let alone walk around or drive a car. A skilled driver can
often get around pretty well on snow-covered roads, but there is
simply no safe way to drive on ice - and there are usually numerous
accidents during every ice storm to prove it.
Ice storms cause another problem as well. The sheer weight of the
ice often brings down trees and power lines by the thousands,
blocking roads and cutting off the power in towns, cities and even
entire states for days and weeks at a time. Countless homes are left
without heat during the coldest time of the year and everything in
refrigerators and freezers goes to waste.
But even as it leaves death, destruction and hardship in its wake,
an ice storm also leaves behind a winter wonderland that can take
our breath away with its stunning beauty. I guess you could call it
"payback" to make up for all the bad things the storm has brought
about. Like the earth itself, God created the weather phenomena that
sweep across its surface, and we humans are tasked with dealing with
it as best we can. Over the years I have learned to appreciate the
beauty as well as the hardships.
About the photo: Photographer
Amanda Gallamore captured this beautiful image. The following is her story behind the photograph:
"This picture was taken in January of 2007 during one of the
worst ice storms in Southwest Missouri. All of the city was without
power so I decided to go for a drive and take a few pictures. There
were trees and power lines down everywhere because of the weight of
the ice. Most of the city is still without power and have been for
days now. I saw this barn on the side of the road and pulled over to
capture this scene."
