The Iwo Jima Memorial in silhouette

Zachary West.
Our nation's capitol is home to a number of beloved memorials which honor
the vision, courage, and sacrifices of the men and women who have
done extraordinary things to help make our country great - and help keep
her that way. One of the most moving memorials of them all is
shown above in silhouette: the Iwo Jima Memorial.
Photographer Zachary West pointed his camera towards the sun to
capture this beautiful image, and the following is his story behind
it:
"This picture was taken at 1:44pm, February 10th, 2008. The Iwo
Jima Memorial located in Washington DC depicts one of the most
famous scenes from World War II. During the capture of the small
island of Iwo Jima, five Marines and a Navy corpsman raised the
flag
over the island on the peak of Mount Suribachi. The image of
them
raising the flag was captured by a news reporter, and has
since
become one of the most memorable and inspiring moments
of World War
II. The very beautiful and moving Iwo Jima Memorial
can be found in Washington, DC."
