Honoring the protectors of our freedom

Photo of an American flag covering the grave of a fallen soldier.

We Americans are blessed by our Creator with the privilege of living our lives in the most open and free society on earth. Our forefathers shared a vision of a great nation where the people ruled the government, and although for practical reasons that ideal can never be fully reached, the country they passed down to us comes closer than any other in the history of the world.

Those amazing men and the patriots who followed them into battle against the British king risked their lives and fortunes to bring forth on this continent a new nation where we can all live in peace and harmony, free from the tyranny of a dictatorship. From day one, we have always been proud to call ourselves Americans - not because we share a common ethnicity or religion, but rather we share a common set of ideals.

We Americans believe that freedom is an inherent right granted to all human beings by our Creator, not a privilege to be extended by a king at his whim. We also believe that all law-abiding people should be free, within reasonable limits, to live, work and worship as they choose without interference from the government. And lastly, we believe that we can, and will, do whatever becomes necessary to preserve those God-given freedoms for ourselves, our families, and our descendents.

To that end, we Americans maintain a mighty military machine employing the finest, most lethal weapons ever devised by man. But even more powerful than all of those weapons combined are the patriotism, honor and dedication to duty of the many thousands of brave soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, coast guard members, policemen and firefighters who risk their own lives and fortunes each and every day to help ensure that we never fall under the jurisdiction of a dictator.

Independence Day is a day of celebration, and so it should be. But it is also a day on which we should all take a few moments to remember and honor those who have served at our side or in our stead in the defense of the ideals and unequaled freedoms we all share as Americans. May God continue to bless the United States of America and everyone who serves to defend her.
