"Magnolia"

Today's picture features a true icon of the American south: a
beautiful magnolia blossom. A number of varieties of magnolias live
all across the United States, but nowhere are they as ubiquitous as
they are in Louisiana and Mississippi, the two states that have
designated the magnolia as their state flowers.
There are a number of magnolia trees growing throughout my neck of
the woods here in southwestern Virginia, and many of them have
already burst into bloom. My dad planted one beside his pond many
years ago, and it is still standing tall and strong almost 8 years
after his passing. He loved to sit under that beautiful magnolia and
watch the fish come to the surface to dine on a handful of bread,
whole-kernel corn, or whatever delectable delight he happened to
toss into the water. I hope no one cuts that wonderful tree down as
it is a wonderful reminder of him and his life.
If you ever find yourself traveling throughout the southern United
States, be sure to keep an eye out for those stately magnolia trees.
After all, they are as much a part of the "southern experience" as
the cotton fields and that wonderful "southern drawl" that you're
sure to hear.
