Picture of the day -
November 12, 2007 Abingdon, Virginia's "Courthouse Hill"

The weather was absolutely gorgeous here in southwestern Virginia
yesterday afternoon, so after church I drove through the historic
town of Abingdon looking for a "photographic opportunity". As
I drove up "Courthouse Hill" on Main Street I noticed how the
afternoon sun was striking the courthouse while the large building
on the left was partially in shadow. I liked the effect, so I pulled
over and took a few pictures.
Although I drive down Abingdon's Main Street almost every day, I had
never really paid much attention to the way the afternoon sun
strikes the buildings. The intriguing combination of direct sunlight
and deep shadows creates quite an interesting contrast, making for
what I think is a pretty neat photograph.
It seems that I'll never run out of "photographic opportunities" in
the Abingdon area. After all, I can visit the same place a dozen
times and end up with images that are vastly different from day to
day, and even hour to hour. I guess my camera loves this town almost
as much as I do!
