Makapu'u Point Lighthouse

Photo of Oahu's Makapu'u Point Lighthouse.

Today's picture features another wonderful photo taken by Amy and Gene during their recent two-week Hawaii vacation. Makapu'u Point Lighthouse sits on the eastern end of the island of Oahu on a very high and steep volcanic cliff and outcropping known as Makapu'u Point. Located not far from the capitol city of Honolulu, the Makapu'u Point and Lighthouse area comprises one of our 50th state's most visited tourist destinations.

This scenic lighthouse has been in constant use by the United States Coast Guard ever since its completion and dedication way back in 1909, but the light itself has been automated since 1974. As you can see here, Makapu'u Point and its namesake lighthouse create quite an impressive vista whether viewed from close-up or far away.

It's quite amazing to me how the entirety of the Hawaiian islands were formed by volcanic eruptions and the resulting lava flows, and this beautiful image really puts the islands' intriguing geology on display!
