"Maple leaf study"

Today's picture could easily be used as a formal study in light and
its effects on objects that we see around us each and every day.
Notice how the parts of the maple leaves that are in shadow are
somewhat dull and lacking in details while the leaves that are
backlit exhibit fine detail in both their texture and "veins".
At its most basic, photography is simply the art and science of
"capturing" light in its various colors and intensities, either on
film or a digital memory card. It's the skill of the
photographer combined with a bit of luck that determines whether a
given photograph will turn out to be poor, good, or a veritable
masterpiece. Photographer Rick Ellis did an outstanding job at
capturing this simple, yet quite striking image. What a masterful
use of light and color!
