Marsh Iris

Since wintry weather has come to many parts of the United States a
bit early this year, it seems like a good time to highlight one of
the beautiful things we can look forward to come spring. Master
photographer Winston Rockwell was kind enough to send in this lovely
photograph of a Marsh Iris in bloom, and he has quite an interesting
story to go along with it:
"The weather has turned dark and dreary here in the Pacific
Northwest. Days are short and usually gloomy, nights are long
and
cold - the kind of weather that, along about February,
makes one
wonder if spring will ever come. But come it does,
as God's cosmic
clock ticks away the days and months that
make up the seasons, and
we know the dark, cold days of
winter will be followed by the
brighter, warmer days of spring.
Here in western Washington, one of the surest signs of spring is
the
marsh iris. Considered an invasive species by many because
it tends
to take over and crowd out other plants in wetlands, it
is
nonetheless a beautiful plant, with long, graceful, spire-like
leaves and brilliant yellow blooms that positively glow in the right
light. Stands of the deep green leaves dotted with bright yellow
flowers can be seen along the shores of many lakes and streams
here,
and offer yet another opportunity to capture an example
of the
beauty of God's creations.
The cold, dark winter season has barely begun, so it'll be a while
before the warmer days return, but images like this serve as a
reminder through the cold, dreary months of winter that spring
will
return, and with it the beauty and color of the natural world
will
be reborn." --Winston Rockwell

This is a stunning picture of a very pretty flower, much like the
irises my mother used to grow in her garden when I was growing up.
Thanks so much for bringing back such a wonderful memory. |
