Late Night At The Martha Washington Inn

There are many historic hotels and inns located all across our great
country. The need for temporary lodging dates all the way back to
colonial times, and as settlers moved west some of them opened up
new hotels to serve those who would follow. As you might recall from
watching those old western movies, virtually every town of any size
had a hotel and saloon.
You'll be hard-pressed to find an operating saloon today, but
hotels, motels, inns and "bed & breakfasts" abound. Just like in the
days of old, virtually every town of any size has at least one of
them. The beautiful and historic town of Abingdon, Virginia has many
places for her visitors to lay their heads, the most spectacular of
which is the stately Martha Washington Inn.
The
history of "The Martha" is just as colorful as that of
Old
Abingdon itself. Prior to her current life as a fine hotel, this
beautiful structure served our region well as a
private home, a women's college, and a combination Civil War
hospital and barracks. As the needs of the people changed, so did
"The Martha".
The next time you find yourself in the Abingdon area, you owe it to
yourself to spend a night or two at the lovely Martha Washington
Inn. You'll find her waiting for you at 150 West Main Street. Oh,
and don't worry about the
ghosts - they say they're quite benign...
About the photo: Last night was warm and pleasant, so I grabbed
my camera and took off in search of some nighttime picture
opportunities. I loved the way the fountain in front of "The Martha"
was all lit up so I stopped and took the "Picture of the Day".
