Picture of the Day - May 25, 2009

Remembering those who gave their all...

Photo of a sea of American Flags on this Memorial Day 2009.

On this Memorial Day 2009, our American Flag is just as beautiful as ever. The magnificent blending of the reds, whites and blue render an image of a flag that, in my opinion, has no equal among its counterparts around the world. But what truly makes Old Glory so special are the values, beliefs, traditions and freedoms that she represents.

Our forefathers founded this great nation upon the belief that all men are created in the image of God, inherently free. They were willing to risk everything they had accumulated during their lifetimes, even their lives themselves, in order that they and those who would come after them would be able to enjoy freedom on a scale that the world had never known before. And they accomplished that mission to perfection.

After the founding fathers and the Continental Army serving under their command had completed the monumental undertaking of fighting for and forging a brand new nation, the responsibility for defending it fell upon the shoulders of the men and women of our military. Our brave soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines have answered the call of their country many times over the last 2 1/3 centuries, and far too many of them had to give their lives so that the rest of us could continue to live ours in freedom. I for one salute and thank each and every one of them.

As beautiful as they are, the flags that mark the countless graves of our fallen warriors on this Memorial Day aren't there as simple decorations. They are there instead to remind you and me that freedom isn't free. It must be "bought" with the selfless service, extreme sacrifice, and spilled blood of the brave individuals that we ask to defend it on our behalf. The men and women we honor today fought and died because they believed so strongly in everything that Old Glory represents, and on this special day we honor them by placing that grand old flag over their graves.

Thanks Rick for taking the time to post this image today along with the words that accompany it!! We owe so much to the many great men and women who have given their all so that we could live free. It is so often taken for granted and far too many people just plain do not care. God bless men and women who have served our county!! Juan, I just want to say thank you for your 22 yrs of service. I have high respect for you!!
