Wintertime in the American Midwest

I have featured many beautiful winter scenes since I began
publishing the "Picture of the Day" way back in February 2005, and
their locations span several continents and nations. But for us
Americans, the winters of the Midwestern region of our great land
are the barometer by which we judge the winters in our own
respective "necks of the woods".
It seems like the American Midwest gets more than its fair share of
snow, frigid temperatures and high winds. The land out there is more
or less flat, so the wind blows pretty much unabated on most of
those chilly winter days, driving snow and ice along with it that
strike any exposed skin like tiny missiles. Ask most any Midwestern
farmer and he'll be sure to tell you that when it comes to "rough"
winters, his/her part of the country ranks right up there with
anyone's.
But as with most things we encounter in our daily lives, there is
beauty in those winters as well. As today's picture so aptly
demonstrates, the blue of the Midwestern sky complements the snowy
landscape rather well, creating a scene that could easily grace a
picture-postcard. It's a shame the photographer who captured this
image chose to remain anonymous because he/she surely deserves a
little recognition for bringing home the beauty of winter in such a
pleasing way.

I really like today’s picture!! The snow is not so deep that it is a
pain to deal with, and the pretty blue sky just seals the deal.
