The Sea Cliffs Of Moloka'i

The islands of Hawaii are famous the world over for their
spectacular scenery and perfect weather, but there are several other
traits of our 50th state which help make it one of the most interesting
states in the union. For example, Hawaii is the only state which
consists entirely of volcanic islands and it is the only state that
is completely separate from the North American continent.
Hawaii's geology is quite unique among the 50 states. Thanks to lava
flows from her active volcanoes, Hawaii is the only state that is
continuously growing in land mass. And at over 13,000 feet in
elevation, Mauna Kea is one of the tallest mountains in America. In
fact, if you count the part that is submerged beneath the
waters of the Pacific ocean, Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain on
the entire planet - taller even than the towering Mount Everest!
Today's picture features yet another geological feature that sets
Hawaii apart from the rest of the U.S. states, and indeed the rest
of the world: the famous sea cliffs on the island of Moloka'i.
Rising some 3,000 feet nearly straight up from the water's edge, Molokai's sea cliffs are
the highest in the world, a fact that makes them the focus of some of this
tropical paradise's most popular helicopter, kayak and canoe tours. Many vacationers
list the view of these imposing cliffs as one of the most memorable
experiences during their stay in the islands!
Hawaii is without a doubt one of the world's most beautiful places,
and her unique geography and geology make her one of the most
interesting of all the United States.
About the photo: Tom Romano submitted today's picture. Here is his story behind the image:
"I took my wife on a helicopter ride around Maui and its surrounding
islands. It was her birthday and this was my present to her. This
particular picture was taken while we were going around the island
of Moloka'i which boasts some of the most extreme terrain on the
planet - including these 3,000 feet sea cliffs!"
