"Monte Baldo"

Photo of Monte Baldo, Italy.

Today's picture features a spectacular view of (and from) the Italian mountain range known as Monte Baldo, a series of five peaks whose collective geological history is just as interesting as the views are stunning. During the last ice age, the top of the entire 1.25 mile high Monte Baldo range remained above the layer of ice that blanketed Europe, a development which resulted in a lush, green landscape that was literally surrounded by nothing but ice and snow.

Today, lush vegetation still remains on the slopes of the mountains, including several rare species that are found nowhere else on the planet. But Monte Baldo's real claims to fame are her popular ski resorts and magnificent views.
